KANBAN is an effective tool LEAN which is not as difficult to implement as most people thought. KANBAN in Japanese means “Look (at the) Board”. Well it doesn’t really need to be a Board…it can be in any form with the intent of providing SIGNAL for people to :

DO THE RIGHT THING….AT THE RIGHT TIME….AT THE RIGHT PLACE…. EVERY TIME (consistently)

I had created the below illustration about 10 years ago for my LEAN Six Sigma training and coaching work. It illustrates how simple paper-clips work as KANBANs in a buffet restaurant that has a BBQ station for customers to order freshly BBQ food….and when the food is done… the waiters will serve it to the right customer table.

Of course there are other Kanban systems, especially in more complex operations which requires careful calculations and design…which I will find some time to illustrate in some of my other articles. Through proper coaching and guidance, I had seen many great implementations of Kanban ideas from ground level staff.

Enjoy your Kanban meal !

Stay tuned for more…
